Jeremy Swanson
Success Story
Forty-five-year-old Jeremy Swanson from Midland, Texas, works in lending in a credit union. When he’s not spending time with his two young daughters and wife, Jeremy enjoys playing guitar, songwriting, producing music, and serving as a worship leader at his church.
For several days, Jeremy had been feeling sick with what he thought was a stomach bug, which included nausea, vomiting, and headache symptoms. He recalls taking medicine one day, but nothing after that. His wife had called and spoke to him in the morning, but he didn’t return any other calls later that afternoon. She left work to check on him and found him in a chair, unconscious and bleeding from his mouth and nose.
Jeremy was rushed to an acute care hospital where doctors diagnosed him with several serious conditions, including brain bleeds (both traumatic and non-traumatic), a shift in his brain, confusion, a slow heart rate, signs of heart injury, a stomach infection, and acute respiratory failure. Initially, he was placed on a ventilator for three days to help him breathe.
Following initial care, a physician at the hospital recommended that Jeremy receive neurorehabilitation at Trustpoint Rehabilitation Hospital of Lubbock (TRHL), which is nationally certified in brain injury rehabilitation by The Joint Commission.
When Jeremy arrived at TRHL, the interdisciplinary healthcare team worked closely with him to develop an individualized treatment plan tailored to his goals. At the time, he was unable to walk or transfer on his own, and he was confined to bed.
“I was in a dark place for the first couple of weeks,” Jeremy says. “But Priscilla, a speech therapist, helped me to understand what had happened to my brain and the challenges that I would face moving forward.”
While at the hospital, Jeremy received intensive physical and occupational therapy to help him regain strength, mobility, and daily living abilities.
“The people at TRHL are wickedly smart and encouraging,” he says. “They actively supported my healing. From diet to therapy to lifestyle, they helped me with my recovery. The nurses really cared and listened.”
After spending two weeks at TRHL, Jeremy is looking forward to returning home to his daughters.
“It’s been an incredibly tough journey, but thanks to TRHL, I haven’t done it alone,” Jeremy says. “I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for those who helped me through this.”
