Jerri Turney
Success Story
Fifty-two-year-old flight attendant Jerri Turney from Lubbock, Texas, enjoys spending her free time playing tennis, camping, traveling, riding ATVs, and being with her family. Recently, her life took an unexpected turn when she developed blood clots in her legs and lungs after starting a new medication while on antibiotics. This led to an allergic reaction that resulted in a rare blood clotting condition called disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). After being hospitalized, she faced another setback: a stroke caused by an unknown hole in her heart.
After initial treatment at the acute care hospital, Jerri chose to receive rehabilitation at Trustpoint Rehabilitation Hospital of Lubbock (TRHL) because of its national certification in stroke rehabilitation. TRHL earned The Joint Commission’s national stroke rehabilitation certification after a rigorous evaluation of the hospital’s practices, programs, and patient outcomes, demonstrating adherence to national standards and evidence-based clinical practices.
Upon entering TRHL, Jerri’s goal was to return to the activities she was able to do before her stroke. The interdisciplinary healthcare team worked with Jerri in creating an individualized treatment plan to help her reach her goals, which included a minimum of 15 hours a week of physical and occupational therapy.
“Therapy was very challenging, but also very rewarding,” Jerri says. “It was encouraging to see daily progress. The therapists and nurses were professional, caring, and encouraging, and the facility was clean, with good food.”
After 16 days at TRHL, Jerri was discharged to home and able to return to work. “Thanks to everyone’s professionalism and support, I had a full recovery,” she says.
